There are several first aid kits stationed throughout the SMSC property.
Using The First Aid Kits
In order to use the first aid kit, you must grab the bar that hangs from the top of the glass in the front of the case. Rotate the bar outward and upward to break the glass seal. Remove the first aid package from the case, it is a sealed ziploc bag inside the case.
Each case contains the following items:
- Vinyl gloves
- Vented chest seal
- Clotting/Coagulant Powder
- Compression Bandage/Israeli Bandage
- Tourniquet
After opening the first aid kit and the package, put on a pair of gloves to protect yourself from any blood-borne contaminants and protect any wounds from debris on your hands.
Depending upon the type and severity of the wound you will need to use the appropriate kit from the package.
A ‘sucking chest wound’ or SCW is a wound to the chest where you can hear sucking or hissing noises when the victim inhales or exhales. This type of wound requires the application of a vented chest seal. Watch this video that demonstrates how to apply the seal: Vented Chest Seal, Occlusive Dressing & Burping – YouTube
A wound which had struck an artery is obvious as it will squirt with the patient’s pulse. This type of injury requires the use of a pressure bandage directly on the wound. If the pressure bandage doesn’t stop the bleeding, the next step is to apply a tourniquet between the patient’s wound and the heart. Watch these videos on the proper application of pressure bandages and tourniquets:

Any bleeding wound can benefit from the application of a clotting agent, especially if the patient is taking blood thinners. The BleedStop package contains a powder which is packed directly onto the wound and covered with a bandage.
